The man living alone in the woods to escape Wi-Fi and mobile phones

I've been through hellishly desperate times with this," he says. "People don't believe that EMFs are the cause of EHS and it gets you in such a state. You're battling for your existence and people think it's all in your head." He breaks down in tears, not for the last time during our interview. The strain of his situation is taking its toll.

EMR Sleep and Obesity

The first item in your latest WEEP update reminded me of this one from 2006:
----------------
Sleep deprivation doubles risks of obesity in both children and adults
Research by Warwick Medical School at the University of Warwick has found that sleep deprivation is associated with an almost a two-fold increased risk of being obese for both children and adults.
Early results of a study by Professor Francesco Cappuccio of the University of Warwick's Warwick Medical School were presented to the International AC21 Research Festival hosted this month by the University of Warwick.

The research reviewed current evidence in over 28,000 children and 15,000 adults. For both groups Professor Cappuccio found that shorter sleep duration is associated with almost a two-fold increased risk of being obese.

The research also suggests that those who sleep less have a greater increase in body mass index and waist circumference over time and a greater chance of becoming obese over time.

Professor Cappuccio says:

"The 'epidemic' of obesity is paralleled by a 'silent epidemic' of reduced sleep duration with short sleep duration linked to increased risk of obesity both in adults and in children. These trends are detectable in adults as well as in children as young as 5 years."

Professor Cappuccio points out that short sleep duration may lead to obesity through an increase of appetite via hormonal changes caused by the sleep deprivation. Lack of sleep produces Ghrelin which, among other effects, stimulates appetite and creates less leptin which, among other effects, suppresses appetite. However he says more research is needed to understand the mechanisms by which short sleep is linked to chronic conditions of affluent societies, such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension.

Francesco Branca, the Regional Adviser for nutrition and food security in the World Health organisation (WHO) Regional Office for Europe said:

"This is an interesting piece of research putting together different lifestyle aspects with food choices. We need more research on the obese environment - the integration between medical research and socio-political research is something we should be exploring more."

Open Letter on Wind Turbine Health Study
To Honourable Minister Aglukkaq and Dr. David Michaud,
From:  Dr. Magda Havas, Trent University
Date:  July 17, 2012.

I would like to congratulate the Federal government for initiating a study on the potential health effects associated with wind turbines.  Such a study is very much needed, especially if the government is continuing to support and promote energy generation from wind.

As an environmental scientists who does research on the health of both the environment and human populations I am  aware of the need for an energy policy that reduces our reliance on fossil fuels, reduces pollution, conserves natural resources and is sustainable.  Wind is an ideal technology but it needs to be use wisely and safely, and any technology that adversely affects human health is unacceptable and needs to be regulated to minimize such effects.

If the government is serious about this study and if genuine feedback is requested, then the deadline for comments needs to be extended from one month–during the height of vacation season–to at least three months. Without this extension the government is simply "giving the appearance" of consulting with the public and this indicates that it does not want to engage in a genuine dialogue about this issue.

Also, I would strongly urge Dr. Michaud and his group to consider all aspects of wind power as the health issues can be with either generation or distribution.

The key health issues that need to be addressed include the effects of:
1.  flicker,
2.  noise,
3.  infrasound,
4.  dirty electricity (power quality associated with inverters), and
5.  ground current.

If any of these are missing then the study will be incomplete.  Also, sensitivity to these "waves" vary greatly within populations and people in the same home may have different sensitivities.  Indeed, different rooms (cavities) in the same home may have different resonant frequencies.

Havas and Colling (2011) wrote a paper regarding this entitled:  Wind Turbines Make Waves:  Why Some Residents Near Wind Turbines Become Ill. Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society 31(5) 414–426.  The first page of that publication is attached.  The entire paper is available on request.

There has already been some excellent research on various aspects of wind generation in both Europe and North America.  I sincerely hope that this group will access that research and not try to reinvent the wheel.

I wish you success in this study and sincerely hope that your findings will provide recommendations on how to live in harmony with wind energy generation and that this report will not be government cover-up to support some poorly made decisions to date.  To minimize this document being perceived as a cover-up I would strongly encourage you to ask two or more members of different wind-turbine groups who have technical and health expertise to be part of the group that either writes or reviews the final document.

Sincerely,
-magda havas

San Francisco Hearing

Please join us at the U.S. Court of Appeals hearing for the CTIA- wireless association v. City and County of San Francisco lawsuit which challenges our right to know about safe use of cell phones.

The hearing is at 9 am on August 9 at the James R. Browning Courthouse at 95 7th St. in San Francisco.  Here is the link:
http://www.ca9.uscourts.gov/datastore/calendaring/2012/05/30/nsf08_12.pdf

The first hearing was in U.S. District court last October and was quite fascinating. It is complicated but SF claimed victory but the CTIA appealed and SF has cross appealed.

The more the better- let's show San Francisco and the nation (other cities and states are watching closely as they too want to legislate but have been threatened with lawsuits) that we support their amazing efforts to stay in this battle as they could have repealed the legislation. We have Supervisor Avalos to thank for introducing new language and saving our right to know!

Those battling cell towers, smart meters, EHS, MCS and others should be concerned as to how this plays out in the court. We all need to ban together in our efforts. I applaud all of you for your tenacity in the face of horrible adversity.

A federal judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit seeking to force Portland Public Schools to remove Wi-Fi installations from its schools.

The judge did not address the merits of the lawsuit and did not rule on motions by both sides to strike the expert opinions of the opposing side.  Morrison said he intends to appeal the decision.

How  to say "stop" to a malignant  tumor in the head?

In Carmel hospital  they are working on solutions without complicated surgeries.

Thousands of Israelis go through surgeries every year because of head and neck tumors. Many researchers claim that smoking and increased use of cell phones cause salivary gland, tongue, throat and the neck tumors, that sometimes send metastases to the brain.

Head and neck surgeries are complicated and require high expertise. Removing tumors from the mouth and neck area include sometimes reconstruction of parts of the throat and neck with advanced technics. A study of  Dr. Mayan Gruber from Carmel hospital studied the causes of development of  head and neck tumors. He studied a specific enzyme (parnas) known to be involved in cancer development. These days he is concentrating in finding new ways to stop the development of the tumor in
early stage and thus to fight it and the disease.   "I hope that by a better understanding of the process of cancer development
we will be able to stop it and thus prevent more complex surgeries and enable treatment and better hope for the patients.
Prof'  Ilana Duek leads the department of head and neck tumors in Carmel hospital, she is considered as one of the most
talented neurosurgeons in the area of head and neck surgeries. She serves as responsilbe for the connection between the faculty
of medicine in the Technion in Haifa and Carmel hospital.
Dr. Gruber won in chosen research work at the annual research day,   "and the work certainly deserves praise and support of continued research", said prof' Moshe Fligelman, the responsible on research day in Carmel hospital.
