Child screen addict fears

Published on 22 May 2012

Alison Campsie

A GENERATION of children risk forming an addiction to devices such as
smartphones, games consoles and televisions in the way drinkers and drug
users become dependent on substances.

Dr Aric Sigman, a clinical biologist and psychologist, said heavy users of
"screen media" could see long-term changes in the brain due to excessive
production of the chemical transmitter dopamine.

Dopamine is central to the brain's reward system and released in response to
novelty and stimulation. Production is known to rise quickly when playing
computer games or watching fast-paced pop videos but the chemical is also
heavily linked to addictions and accelerated by drugs, including cocaine and
methamphetamine.

Dr Sigman, in his research due to be presented to The Royal College of
Paediatrics and Child Health annual conference in Glasgow today, said there
was considerable potential for young users to develop problems, as screen
time hits an all-time high for 10 and 11-year-olds who spend an average of
6.1 hours a day looking at such devices.

Dr Sigman said: "There are concerns this may alter rewards circuitry which
means the user will need to spend more screen time to get the same buzz.

"Previously a child would put £1 in a machine at an arcade and the
experience would be over in 10 minutes, but now we are talking about hours
of this experience every day. We don't think of experience as something
linked to dependence, we only think of a substance.

"Increasing daily dopamine release in reaction to hours of computer games
and other screen media is becoming a real possibility with important
potential consequences."

Dr Sigman found 10 and 11-year-olds now have access to an average of five
screens at home, with young people often looking at two or more screens at
the same time. By the age of seven, a child born today will have spent the
equivalent of one full year watching screen media 24 hours a day, Dr Sigman
said.

Authorities in the US and Australia have recommended no screen time for
children aged two and under and Dr Sigman has called for the threshold to be
extended to three-year-olds. He also recommends a two-hour daily screen
limit for young people aged up to 18.

As well as changes in the brain and increased likelihood of type 2 diabetes
and poor cardiovascular health, Dr Sigman said there was a "strenuous link"
with attention problems and high dopamine levels.

He added: "Whether children or adults are formally 'addicted' to screen
technology or not, many of them overuse technology and have developed an
unhealthy dependency on it."

Iain McCrae, from Knightswood in Glasgow, is only four but has a child's
touch-screen tablet and often uses his sister's iPad to play more advanced
games.

His father Gordon said: "Iain is amazing, the whole thing just comes
naturally to him and his gran can't believe he can pick it up, put in a
password and start playing games."

As well as an iPad, his sister Heather, 11, has a laptop, a Blackberry phone
and a television in her room.

Mr McCrae, who works for a mental health organisation, said: "We had to
limit the time Heather was on the iPad. She uses it for homework, but her
own use was a bit excessive."

Radiating the kids

The number of digital applications for babies and very young children is exploding.  All classrooms in public schools in Angers, France, will be equipped with digital tablets.  This is a first for Europe.  In the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, this is not yet the case.  The pedagogical director of public education explains that "in addition to the absence of political will, the use of tablets requires high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity and raises the problem of electrosmog."  The following article presents the issue of kids playing with tablets vs. traditional toys.

LOCAL NEWSPAPER COVERS SMARTMETER STORY

A local community newspaper has reported on Wilner & Associates' complaint filed with the California Public Utilities Commission concerning SmartMeter opt-out issues that is scheduled to be dismissed.  The article also includes some very interesting comments by Lisa Miller of Novato, California who explains how she was made ill by a SmartMeter installed at her home, and when she left the area, her symptoms went away.  Thanks to the opt-out program, Lisa now has an analog electric meter installed at her home, and the communications module installed on her gas meter has also been removed.  This has made a substantial improvement in her quality of life.

Lisa also asked her neighbors to opt out to help with her health problems.  They did so as a favor to her and, much to their surprise, their problems with headaches, ringing in the ears, and sleep issues that they had not attributed to SmartMeters also disappeared.  This is the kind of story that should provide encouragement to those in California that fought for the opt-out option, and open up new possibilities by making their neighbors aware that they can also have an analog meter instead of a SmartMeter.

One Billion Potential Family Killers

Wi-Fi Continues to Dominate One Billion Unit Home Networking Equipment and Networked-Enabled Media Device Market, Says ABI Research by Business Wire

As the number of connected media devices grows, home networking will continue to gain importance in consumers' expanding digital lifestyle. By 2014, shipments of core home networking equipment (home gateways/routers, adapters, bridges, NICs, embedded LAN, NAS) and networked-enabled media devices (CE devices with network connectivity, excluding computers and mobile devices) will exceed one billion units

Senior analyst Michael Inouye comments, "On the CE side, TVs, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes are expected to lead in shipments. As pay-TV operators continue to push new services and features, such as multiscreen initiatives and whole home DVRs, connectivity will increasingly come to the forefront of the digital living room."

While Wi-Fi is expected to remain the most common technology used to connect these media devices (in most cases greater than 60%), other wired networking technologies (through adapters) such as MoCA, G.hn, power line communication, and HomePNA, are expected to start gaining additional traction. A critical missing component has been consumer mindshare, but this is anticipated to grow as more pay-TV/broadband operators use these devices to extend services throughout the home.

"The market vision is to enable a seamless networking environment that will rely on a number of technologies," adds Inouye. "A consumer, for instance, might start a file transfer to a media tablet using 60GHz wireless technology, then switch to a 5GHz technology as the device moves about the home, and then again, unbeknownst to the consumer, switch to MoCA to finish the download as the tablet is docked. Even with working groups such as P1905.1 building toward a connected networking environment, this future will still need the support of all companies throughout the value chain, considering the large number of consumers who in past primary studies have shown a general lack of awareness about the networking technologies currently in their homes."

ABI Research's new report, "Home Networking Market Data," (http://www.abiresearch.com/research/1003252) provides quarterly updates on market forecast data for home networking equipment and connected CE devices.

The report is part of ABI Research's Connected Home Research Service (http://www.abiresearch.com/products/service/Connected_Home_Devices_Research_Service).

Wireless radiation significantly affects sleep.  This also effects our overall health.

Importance of Sleep

While sleep needs are individual, more people than not say they experience sleep problems or are just not managing to get enough sleep. This doesn't bode well when you consider that too little sleep can be detrimental to your health and can jeopardize your safety. Let's look at the importance of sleep on your overall well-being and how you can feel better rested when the alarm goes off.

How much sleep are we getting compared to the amount that we need in order to sustain a healthy lifestyle? Sleep experts recommend on average eight hours of sleep per night (though that number will vary on individual needs), but up to 40 per cent of Canadians may be sleeping less than six to eight hours a night. The result is an accumulated sleep debt. Like financial debt, sleep debt does not go away until you pay it back. How much sleep do you need to stay on a healthy track?

We all have reasons - maybe good ones - for not getting enough sleep. But once you understand how much your health depends on adequate rest, you may think twice about turning on the television, working late, or putting off getting help for your sleep disorder. Here's why you should make sleep your priority.

Tossing and turning at night? You're not alone - insomnia affects an estimated one-third of adults, not to mention the approximately 80 other sleep-related disorders that keep people from getting enough sleep.

Newsletter 6 – May 2012
http://www.facebook.com/groups/emractionday

Dear Valued Friends and Colleagues

21 April 2012 has come and gone and what is left is the satisfaction of having seen the public beginning to question the sanity of humanity's use of man-made electromagnetic radiation.

Reports came in from far and wide about celebrations of natural communications, protests against the non-natural, radiation-measuring walks through towns and cities, wireless-free-day encouragement, petition signing, smart meter removals, moratoria and white papers, and even the education of women to take the dastardly phone out of their bras!

It was exciting and rewarding to be part of EMR Action Day.  If nothing happened in your area, please start doing some forward thinking as to how YOU can make a splash next year - and well before then!  Every drop eventually makes up an ocean.

Our heartfelt thanks to all who participated and a special thank you to those who did all-nighters behind the scenes in preparing material, website, petitions, brochures, stands at Earth Day events etc.

If you would still like to tell us how you were involved, please do so.

Here are some upcoming events in which we encourage your participation. (Should your organization wish inclusion of your future events in our bi-monthly newsletters, kindly forward a 2-3 liner for acceptance and publication to mail to:
vickyben@mweb.co.za

MAY 31 is the first anniversary of the WHO classification of RF Fields as a possible carcinogen, The telecom industry and US federal government continue to deceive the public. Join our national rally in front of wireless stores this May 31 to demand our RIGHT TO KNOW! YOUR support is greatly needed. For details contact Ellie Marks (California Brain Tumor Association) cabtasf@hotmail.com

5 June 2012 is World Environment Day and it is important that our struggle is brought firmly into the realm of the environment. To keep the impetus established alive here are some suggestions for Tuesday 5 June

·         Show the movie Full Signal in your local venues

·         Have a picnic/protest in an open space that is under attack from masts (position yourselves away from the beams!)

·         Hold a gathering, with suitable media coverage, around trees that are being killed by the radiation. Put fabric (not plastic!) ribbons/sashes around these precious creations.

·         Encourage friends (and even foes) to have a wireless-free-day once a month or more frequently.

A protest in support of the One Code 4 MCS/EHS to recognise EHS – just 5 MEP are needed to start the campaign. Let's get the rest of the MEP in Europe interested. An awareness event will very soon be organized using the idea of carrying shielded umbrellas as well as placards across street crossings - easy to do all over Europe and a sure publicity catcher. For further info please contact Velma at velmalyrae@hotmail.co.uk

Regarding the Petition, a reminder that filled in petitions (even if incomplete) should be scanned and e-mailed to vickyben@mweb.co.za. The originals should be mailed to:

EMR Action Day, P O Box 2093, Northwold 2155, South Africa.

Please collect signatures at every opportunity and once we have a reasonable number, these will be presented to the UNEP and WHO.

The importance of language utilized cannot be understated and it is imperative that we sing from the same hymn sheet. The phrase "OPT OUT" as promulgated by the smart meter industry is a carefully laid trap and should not be entertained. Replace it with "REFUSE" in all demands in literature, correspondence and in court. To accept "opt-out" means that there has already been "buy-in" with a subjugation of rights, which is UNTRUE. It also gives the other side the way back in, at a later stage. "Refuse" stops it dead in its tracks. These guys are clever and we need to call their bluff!  Let us meet strength with strength.

Remember to go to the website (www.EMRActionDay.org) which includes scientific and medical  studies which are only a click-away. These carry a lot of clout in arguments.

EMR Action Day exists to encourage others and strengthen their voices in this vital work that is being done by more and more people all over the world. We honour you.

Kind regards

EMR Action Committee

Oakville Cell Tower

Health Canada Director General Beth Pieterson stated at the Monday meeting the RF energy from a cell tower is not localized to one part of the body the way it is with a cell phone, but is instead absorbed in very low levels all over the body where it causes no harm.

Some of the resident concerns about the amount of RF energy coming from a cell tower came from a statement by Holt that Industry Canada does not monitor cell towers for Safety Code 6 violations after they are approved unless they believe there may be an issue.

Concerns expressed by residents focused around the development of cancers due to RF exposure, but also other health impacts.

Council heard from Veronica Ciandre who said she and her daughter began to experience a number of health issues shortly after 10 cell antennas were installed just above her top floor apartment in Toronto.

"Before three years ago I was healthy I slept like a baby and I didn't wake up with numb hands and feet, my body feeling prickly all night long, tingling and vibrating almost all day," said Ciandre.

"I didn't spend night after night in a hyperactive state of anxiety feeling like electricity was running through me. I lived in a home that I loved. It was my sanctuary. I did not have Tinnitus, a hissing or buzzing or a high pitch sound in my ear. I did not ever get tension headaches or feel like there was an invisible band around my head creating pressure. I did not feel boughs of naseau."

Others called for more public consultation, regarding the placement of cell towers, particularly for those under 15 metres in heig

Biological Effects

These three items confirm that there is a biological effect from microwaves. We may have known it all along but here is evidence that the same technology being used in Iraq is being converted to civilian applications. This is being done covertly in a transfer of technology from the military to big business.

It is relevant to note that the big universities - including University College Dublin and the League of European Research Universities (LERU) have TTOs - Technology Transfer Offices. These facilitate the transfer of knowledge to business / military for cash.)

This is a logical progression in which each partner could claim that they are fulfilling their brief (in secret, of course) without public debate. The situation reflects the failure of politicians to adequately represent their constituents and the media to inform the public who would elect (not always) ethical representatives.

Ireland is central to this process because it is an incubation centre for this kind of technology. Who knows how many Irish citizens have been injured, perhaps killed by mistake, as this technology was / is being developed? Our freedom and our lives and the lives of our children are at stake.
